Step-by-step workflow

How to use the original Square Face Generator without guessing where the old controls live.

The generator is preserved from an older Flash-style interface, so it does not behave exactly like a new mobile avatar app. This guide explains the real sequence: load the maker, press START, use the original tabs, build the face in a sensible order, and save the classic 256x256 PNG from inside the tool.

First click

Press START inside the green panel. The surrounding website button only takes you to the embedded maker.

Best device

Desktop is easier because the original square face maker was designed for mouse input and compact tabs.

Save flow

The SAVE button belongs to the original maker and exports the classic 256x256 PNG locally.

Quick sequence

Use this order when you want the square face avatar to look clean fast.

Start with the choices that shape the whole face, then move to smaller expression and accessory details.

1. Wait for the original maker to load

The page loads the preserved SWF through Ruffle. If the maker area is still empty, give it a few seconds before clicking reload.

2. Press START in the green panel

The first interactive screen is part of the original tool. Click START inside that panel to enter the editor.

3. Set skin and hair before expression

Choose skin, bangs, and side hair first. Those parts establish the silhouette, so later eyes and mouth choices are easier to judge.

4. Save only after zooming out mentally

The final avatar is small. Before saving, ask whether the eyes, mouth, and hair still read clearly at profile-icon size.

Controls inside the maker

The old tabs are compact, but the logic is straightforward once you know the grouping.

Think of the editor as a sequence of face-part shelves rather than a modern design panel.

Base and silhouette

  • Skin controls the basic face tone.
  • Bangs and Side Hair define the strongest visible shape.
  • Hats can change the balance, so choose them after hair if you use them at all.

Expression and details

  • Eye, Nose, Mouth, and Eyebrow and Eyelash control the expression.
  • Cheek and Wrinkle adds warmth, but too much detail can blur at small sizes.
  • Glasses, Clothes, and Other are best used as accents, not the main identity.
Troubleshooting

If the old interface feels confusing, these are the common fixes.

The generator loaded, but I only see the intro screen. What next?

Click START inside the green panel. That is the original tool's own start screen, not a decorative banner.

Why does it feel better on desktop?

The original square face maker was built for mouse input. Modern mobile browsers can try to run it, but small tabs and old controls are easier on desktop.

Where is the download button?

Use SAVE inside the embedded maker. The export flow belongs to the original SWF, so it is not a separate modern button outside the player.

Next step

When you understand the controls, the homepage is still the fastest place to create.

Use this guide as a reference, then jump back to the preserved generator and build the avatar in one pass.
